Why Robberies Increases Around Christmas

The months leading to Christmas are normally filled with joy. They are also filled with lots and lots of shopping. It is a time of the year when people dig into their wallets and buy those they love gifts to show their appreciation. There are also all kinds of holiday discounts which give people even more incentive to shop away.

It is a jolly time of year. However, it is also a time of year when a certain crime greatly increases. Robberies dramatically increase during the Christmas shopping season. Having cash, purses, and bags full of gifts stolen are devastating happenings that ruin holiday cheer.

When people shop during the Christmas season they often get a type of shopping tunnel vision. This means that they are really not paying much attention to what's going on around them. Unfortunately, this means that if a person is robbed during this time they will probably be caught off guard and will not have time to react.

There are a number of reasons why this crime happens a lot more often during the holiday season. First of all, stores are carrying a lot more cash in their registers than at other time of the year. A store might not be a typical target for some burglars but during the holidays knowing that there is more cash in the store will make some robbers change their patterns.

People also carry more cash during this time of year and of course there are lots of people walking around with expensive items in bulky bags. At this time of year burglars become more brazen in their crimes. They are more likely to openly grab bags and run, even in crowded places during the daytime.

Criminals also steal items out of cars more often at this time of year. This is simply because they are more likely to find bags of gifts with expensive items in them. By breaking in a car window or prying open a trunk they can get a away with hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of goods.

Another reason that robberies increase at this time of year is desperation. This is a time of year when people who have never stolen before may commit the crime because they are desperate. They may want to get their hands on expensive items because they need money or because they want to be able to provide their own kids with gifts.

It is important to be aware of your surroundings. You don't want to have your holiday ruined by having your gifts stolen. Criminals who steal right out of the hands of their victims in places like store parking lots most often target people who are not paying attention or who are multi-tasking. Look around, hold your bags tights, and do not leave gifts unattended in the car for long periods of time.
